Dressed in Love

Is love really overrated? Either way, one’s wardrobe should certainly reap the benefits of St. Valentine’s holiday. After all, it’s a great excuse to go shopping ;).

The first look is the one that I would wear for the festivities. Adding some subtle lace underneath a well-fitting suit is an easy way to vamp up a classic. As for the sneakers, my mind was filled with street style inspiration and how the athletic shoe has transcended work out attire. It’s a great way to combine style and practicality.

If you prefer something more on the colorful side, you can’t go wrong with an LRD (little red dress). The quirky Kate Spade clutch was the main influence for the second look. Keeping the rest of the pieces light makes for a quick way to be ready for a night on the town.

Black Snow

Snow continues to fall as abundant as sunshine on a summer’s day. The world around me carries on muted by the cool silence of winter. Sure, some days the temperature drops down to the single digits, but in a way it’s peaceful. What better way to enjoy it than with some lovely outerwear, wouldn’t you say?

Winter style is often accused of being heavy in dark colors, and for me that is both true and exactly how I like it. Combining a cape with an equally flowy skirt breaks free from the usual stiff cold weather ensembles. Only a black long sleeve was needed underneath since the cape’s textile is already a soft wool. Argyle stockings were an intermission to the solid colors. The ALDO combat boots added some toughness to the feminine elements. The few small bits of color were in a retro radio clutch and blue nail polish.

Leather Love

It’s said that all leathers exhibit their own one-of-a-kind natural markings; that it’s practically impossible to find two samples that share identical surface and color characteristics. This amazingly durable fabric embodies individuality.

Remember the Axel Leather Biker Jacket from AllSaints that I featured in this post? Thanks to the holiday sales, I was over the moon to receive it last year. Its combination of knitted wool and leather does an excellent job of blocking out the northern winter chill. Wearing a black long sleeve underneath, I was ready to brave the cold. I paired it with riding boots and my go-to jeans. Letting the jacket speak for itself, my only accessory was a white and gold clutch from ASOS. As for my makeup, it included a clear lip gloss from Stila and a purple eyeliner from Urban Decay labeled Tornado.

Skull Cardigan

Happy New Year everyone!

To ring in 2015, I wore a cozy and gothic skull cardigan. Its long, waterfall design makes it perfect to wear with leggings. I paired it with an oxblood colored long sleeve and what some call skeggings. They are a leggings and skirt combination built into one. Quite ingenious don’t you think? The black Kate Spade handbag is both spacious and versatile. It’s also no secret that I love boots. The motorcycle boots with decorative gold zippers and buckles are the latest additions to my shoe rack. Cat eyes made with Urban Decay eyeliner and my lips shaded with Burt’s Bees colored lip balm were the high points of my makeup.

New Piercings + Accessories

As a late Hanukkah gift from my parents, I recently received three new ear piercings; another on each lobe and my first helix. I had them done at The Quillian Tattoo in Allentown, Pennsylvania and I absolutely adore my piercings! The shop’s piercer and former nursing assistant, Desiree, was professional and extremely sanitary. There was only a small amount of pain with each piercing; especially since she used only a needle rather than one of those terrible piercing guns. There was a quick pinch and done!

The accessories I wore included a black Kate Spade handbag and motorcycle boots with gold zipper and buckle detailing. I am also now sporting a full on fringe hairstyle. I will be doing a better feature on them in my next post.

My Style Icons – Part 2

Finally, It’s part two of my style icons series! I was at a major indecision about who to feature next, but I’ll have to save the rest for part three.

Melanie Martinez

I personally discovered an up and coming musician recently by the name of Melanie Martinez. She was a contestant on season three of The Voice and has since released her debut EP, Dollhouse. Martinez’s song Carousel continues to be on my iPod’s repeat cycle. Her fashion sense blends retro with modern alternative flair. From oversized bows to doll heads to her signature two-toned hair, it’s hard to believe that Martinez is just getting started.

The entire Alexander McQueen brand

If I had to choose a favorite fashion design house, it would have to be Alexander McQueen. Despite McQueen’s tragic death back in 2010, the brand has stayed strong in the capable hands of its current head designer, Sarah Burton. The surprising elegance and essence of surrealism that the brand delivers is pure artistry. The amount of precise detailing that goes into the garments makes the already innovative looks all the more special. I always look forward to the design house’s runway show during fashion week.

I’m a Hat Person Now

The possibilities are endless when it comes to accessorizing with outerwear. I recently obtained a black wide brim hat that has quickly become a new wardrobe staple for me. Not only is it highly versatile, but it can be worn during any season; whether it be with a light dress in Summer or with layers in Winter. With warmer days now behind us here in Pennsylvania, I opted to wear the hat with layers. A pair of jeans and a black long sleeve shirt provided a canvas to compliment the moto jacket. My mystic hamsa print scarf is a statement piece in itself that blended well with the color palette. Black flats and a gemstone ring were small additions that made the look complete.

Falling for Autumn

Autumn is truly my favorite season. The leaves changing into a mob of warm colors, scents of pumpkin and cinnamon filling homes, and Halloween creeping around the corner are a few of the many things about Fall that steal my heart. Yet above all of that, the thing that I will always love most about the season is reintroducing cold weather appropriate pieces into my wardrobe. For my first outfit of the new season I wore a cobalt blue sweater with leather and zipper detailing from EXPRESS. A black skinny jean was the transition piece to the floral print Doc Marten boots. The only jewelry needed to polish it off were gold hoop earrings and one statement ring. In the beauty department, I opted for a simple ponytail and winged eyeliner as one of my makeup choices.

My Style Icons – Part 1

In the fashion industry, it’s important to know what it is you want to say about yourself and your work. As I’ve been pinpointing my interests and developing my personal style, I’ve found several style mavens that influence me and have introduced me to new ways of thinking about fashion.

Lykke Li

When deciding who to feature in this post, one of my favored musicians immediately came to mind. Lykke Li is undoubtedly unique in both her style and her sound. Her fashion sense is simplistic with a twist. Li sticks mainly to black and white pieces, but keeps things interesting with a mixture of structured and free-flowing shapes. She hits the mark when it comes to experimenting with textures as well. Just like with her music, Lykke Li leaves no room for gimmicks and instead focuses on quality. She says herself in an interview with Vogue, “I need to travel light but still feel empowered – there’s no space for frills or colours; quality above all!”.

Luanna Perez

Luanna Perez is the creator of the popular style blog Le Happy. Since 2010, she has been sharing her alternative fashion sense and has since gained a large fan base. Perez has a talent for taking her clothing to the next level and presenting the unexpected. Her look gives off a cool girl vibe that I find particularly fascinating. Her fondness for trendy shoes and accessories such as creepers, round lens sunglasses, and chunky knit beanies is also a plus.

Skellington

I’ve been inspired by a recent addition to my playlist, “Sally’s Song”; my favorite ballad from The Nightmare Before Christmas. What’s yours? With simple black leggings, I wore a double-sided Jack Skellington shirt dress and army green ankle booties. I color coordinated my black and red nail polish to accent the colors in the dress. I accessorized with my versatile, spiked bangles, a red gemstone ring, and a black and white polka dot bow headband.

Closet Swap-Seasonal Magic

April showers have brought May flowers and the transition from a Winter to Summer wardrobe. I was approached by a website called Raise.com to participate in their Closet Swap campaign! Raise.com is a marketplace where you can buy discounted gift cards for your favorite brands (https://www.raise.com/buy-gift-cards). You could also sell any of your unused gift cards for cash! Their Closet Swap campaign features the transition from a cold to warm weather wardrobe. For my contribution to the campaign, I decided to wear a loose, fringe top with a lace bandeau and pastel pink shorts underneath; something freeing and easy to move in. My Converse sneakers are both stylish and appropriate for tree climbing. I stayed light on the jewelry with skeleton earrings and several bracelets. Green glitter nail polish completed the look.

Bonus! Here are some of my top Summer accessory tips:

1. Pumped up kicks

Tired of those white laces? Swap out your standard shoelaces for something more colorful. Make sure you find a pair that are the same length as the original laces.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

2. Dial up your nail art

Add designs and patterns to your manicure with a nail stamping kit. All you have to do is paint your favorite color polish over the decal, wipe off the excess with the scraper, and transfer the design from the stamp to your nails.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

3. Dye your hair…temporarily

Colored hair extensions are an interesting and unexpected twist to a look. The extensions pictured below are the ones I used in my Gothic Holiday post. They are made out of real human hair which provides a very realistic result.

Gothic Holiday

It was Easter Sunday yesterday and I wore the polar opposite of your typical Easter attire. I’ve lately been admiring all things pastel goth. It was my first time using my pink hair extensions; I adored the result! I would definitely like to try more colors. The cathedral cross print blouse is a new addition to my closet from Hot Topic. I love its studded collar detailing. The pleated faux leather skirt compliments the toughness of the blouse. Glitter nail art and a tiny skull and crossbones necklace were my accessory highlights. Purple flats give this look a little extra color.

Winter Wonderland

With the cold wave continuing to sweep across Pennsylvania, days for a photo shoot have been practically null. I finally got an opportunity for one yesterday while my parents and I are on a mini-vacation at my grandparent’s log cabin. The only problem was…it was less than 15 degrees outside! With it being so cold, me and my mom (the photographer) continuously would snap a few pictures and then run back inside to warm up before heading out again. Not exactly the finest day to stand still and pose, but a good result came of it.

Only one word came to my mind when deciding what to wear: layers! I pulled on a white sweater over my black long sleeve shirt to provide extra insulation. To keep my feet toasty, I tucked a pair of long socks underneath my leggings. My plaid holiday skirt gave this look a splash of print. The ankle boots are a recent purchase from CL by Chinese Laundry. To top it all off, I layered on a thick, black overcoat and a crochet cupcake scarf I made (pattern by Twinkie Chan).

Farewell Summer

The leaves are changing, a new school year is starting, and a new season of fashion is arriving. Before the Summer of 2013 ends, I had one last hurrah. This is also my last shoot before I get my new hairstyle!

With a knee-length red skirt, I made a “The War is Over” tee into a crop top. Strappy leather platforms and cat-eye sunglasses kept things fun and casual. Light bracelets and my mother’s old engagement ring were used as accents.

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

“Columcille Megalith Park, Land of Myth and Mystery” the sign said at the shoot location. It was a happy coincidence to see that slogan considering my T-shirt choice!

My comical little red riding hood tee, Old Navy purple shorts and converse sneakers made walking the humid trail comfortable. The crossbody Kate Spade bag can be seen in my previous post “Like a Flower, Spring Fashion Blooms”. The crochet bracelets were made by me. They’ll be featured along with other crochet accessories in my new, upcoming post segment.
