Dressed in Love

Is love really overrated? Either way, one’s wardrobe should certainly reap the benefits of St. Valentine’s holiday. After all, it’s a great excuse to go shopping ;).

The first look is the one that I would wear for the festivities. Adding some subtle lace underneath a well-fitting suit is an easy way to vamp up a classic. As for the sneakers, my mind was filled with street style inspiration and how the athletic shoe has transcended work out attire. It’s a great way to combine style and practicality.

If you prefer something more on the colorful side, you can’t go wrong with an LRD (little red dress). The quirky Kate Spade clutch was the main influence for the second look. Keeping the rest of the pieces light makes for a quick way to be ready for a night on the town.

AllSaints Makes My Heart Skip a Beat

November has been a month of discoveries for me, and one of those discoveries was a brand called AllSaints. I first heard of it when I saw Lucy Liu wearing a variety of its garments on Elementary. AllSaints is a British retailer with a cool and edgy style. One of the things I really love is the versatility of the pieces. When purchasing new additions to my wardrobe, I’m the type of person who expects them to last for years to come. I like being able to integrate them into countless different looks and AllSaints feels as if they design with that in mind.

My top AllSaints picks:

allsaints1.jpg

Hyde Monument Coat, $650.00

allsaints4.jpg

Window Top, $75.00

allsaints2.jpg

Zaphir Dress, $360.00

allsaints3.jpg

Kayla Shirt, $140.00

Most of the designs are based on structural elements. They are generally sold in muted colors, but their shapes and textures make them immensely far from boring. I can’t wait to have the opportunity to splurge on an AllSaints garment or two someday. Have any of my top picks caught your eye? They certainly have mine.

allsaints5.jpg

Axel Leather Biker Jacket, $725.00

allsaints6.jpg

Raffi Leggings, $75.00

allsaints7.jpg

Hafbec Dress, $215.00

allsaints8.jpg

Mast/Slashed Grey, $160.00

My Style Icons – Part 2

Finally, It’s part two of my style icons series! I was at a major indecision about who to feature next, but I’ll have to save the rest for part three.

Melanie Martinez

I personally discovered an up and coming musician recently by the name of Melanie Martinez. She was a contestant on season three of The Voice and has since released her debut EP, Dollhouse. Martinez’s song Carousel continues to be on my iPod’s repeat cycle. Her fashion sense blends retro with modern alternative flair. From oversized bows to doll heads to her signature two-toned hair, it’s hard to believe that Martinez is just getting started.

The entire Alexander McQueen brand

If I had to choose a favorite fashion design house, it would have to be Alexander McQueen. Despite McQueen’s tragic death back in 2010, the brand has stayed strong in the capable hands of its current head designer, Sarah Burton. The surprising elegance and essence of surrealism that the brand delivers is pure artistry. The amount of precise detailing that goes into the garments makes the already innovative looks all the more special. I always look forward to the design house’s runway show during fashion week.

Fashion DIY: Bloody Necklace

Halloween is coming up and I love it when people make their own costumes rather than purchasing generic ones. Last month, I came up with a DIY idea that’s both perfect for the October festivities and for those who, like myself, simply possess a fondness for alternative style.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Materials:

Necklace (or other piece of jewelry) of your choosing

1 tube of red craft paint (I used Apple Barrel’s Flag Red)

A small cup of water

1 toothbrush

1 spoon (or spork)

1 paper bowl

Paper towels

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Step 1: Squeeze a large drop of craft paint into the bowl. Add water a little bit at a time and mix it until you reach a thick yet loose consistency, like blood.

Step 2: Spread out your necklace on a blanket of paper towels.

Step 3: Dip the toothbrush into your fake blood mixture and splatter the concoction onto your necklace with a controlled, flicking motion.

Step 4: Leave your necklace to dry for about 20 minutes or until the paint is no longer tacky. When dry, turn it over and repeat step 3 on the other side. Then you’re done!

Home Run Hats

Sports have always been a part of my life, especially baseball. I’ve attended many live games of America’s pastime, but one that I remember most was when I saw the New York Yankees play back when their old stadium was still standing. Those memories were all brought back to me when I participated in a campaign to construct the perfect baseball game day style for Fanatics, the leading online retailer for everything sports. I was tasked with picking the hat of my choice from the great selection Fanatics offers on their MLB hats page and pairing it with clothing and accessories to showcase my baseball-inspired outfits.

Scrolling through an array MLB hats, I was surprised to see how much Fanatics has available for baseball fans. I eventually decided on the New Era New York Yankees Galaxy 59FIFTY Fitted Hat. I love that hat not only because it shows off its wearer’s NY Yankees team spirit, but also because its stand-out print immediately caught my eye. I created two looks for a truly unique New York Yankees fan. Enjoy!

My Style Icons – Part 1

In the fashion industry, it’s important to know what it is you want to say about yourself and your work. As I’ve been pinpointing my interests and developing my personal style, I’ve found several style mavens that influence me and have introduced me to new ways of thinking about fashion.

Lykke Li

When deciding who to feature in this post, one of my favored musicians immediately came to mind. Lykke Li is undoubtedly unique in both her style and her sound. Her fashion sense is simplistic with a twist. Li sticks mainly to black and white pieces, but keeps things interesting with a mixture of structured and free-flowing shapes. She hits the mark when it comes to experimenting with textures as well. Just like with her music, Lykke Li leaves no room for gimmicks and instead focuses on quality. She says herself in an interview with Vogue, “I need to travel light but still feel empowered – there’s no space for frills or colours; quality above all!”.

Luanna Perez

Luanna Perez is the creator of the popular style blog Le Happy. Since 2010, she has been sharing her alternative fashion sense and has since gained a large fan base. Perez has a talent for taking her clothing to the next level and presenting the unexpected. Her look gives off a cool girl vibe that I find particularly fascinating. Her fondness for trendy shoes and accessories such as creepers, round lens sunglasses, and chunky knit beanies is also a plus.
